Anyone out there got a “First Song” that made you feel on top of the world when you could play it ? Would you recommend it to others ? What skills did you need to play it smoothly ? Did it lead you to other similar tunes ? Let us know !

I think Marry Me by Drive by Truckers was the first one where I really felt like I could move a crowd with it and make my own. I don’t know that I’ve truly mastered it, but the chords are beginner (no barre chords) with a little bit of spice here and there. California Stars by Billy Bragg and Wilco and Wagon Wheel would be others that I think are good for beginners.

My easiest and favorite song to play and sing is Tangled Up In Blue by Bob Dylan. It is remarkably easy for beginners like me…..I guess that this dates me—oh well!

Mastered? Can’t say I’ve gotten that far, but the first song I can play all the way through is Yesterday by the Beatles.
No tricks really except that I strum like my 7 year old grandson does and that’s where it sounds good. Sort of up and down on a couple of strings here and there that makes it sound closest to the melody. I’ll ask Jonathan if there’s a name for this technique, but I doubt there is.

Yesterday is a great song. Will have to learn that one.
